Cracked screen - how to backup files if screen is unresponsive?

Hi guys,

Somehow, last night, my Nexus 5's screen cracked while I had the phone in my pocket. I'm trying now to backup all of the files that I have on my phone, but the screen is totally unresponsive (glass is not cracked, only the internal LCD apparently) and the screen doesn't appear to be registering touch commands or does so randomly and sometimes, but that's beside the point.

I've connected the phone via the provided USB cable, but there are no files visible when I open the phone folder. Also, since the screen is unusable I can't switch the phone from "charging mode" to "storage mode" so as to see the files.
Is there any way around this so I can access my files and back them up? (most of my photos are backed up on Google Photos, but I don't have backups for my other apps, like WhatsApp etc.)

Thanks in advance for any help!
